Deschutes ‘mirror pond’ pale ale

Rating:

image“Mirror Pond Pale Ale is the quintessential northwest pale ale. Cascade hops and more Cascade hops give this tawny colored ale delicious hop-forward aroma and flavor. Pale malt allows the hops to linger, not overpower.”

This is our first crack at this American breweries range. We served this pale ale into a shaker glass and the appearance displayed an almost transparent amber-orange with a 1 inch white head that retains well. Good lacing. Initially there is a slightly subdued floral hop aroma. The pale and crystal malts dominate a little more, offering caramelised and soft earthy notes. After a few deep whiffs we find zesty citrus, orange peel and pine sitting just underneath to add that extra balance and depth. Smooth mouth feel with medium carbonation. Moderate body. In the mouth soft bitter hops are detected upfront which work smoothly into the subtle grainy, caramelised mid-palate. The light, dry citric finish also offers a soft malty presence to balance. Good length. 5% ABV was spot on, needed nothing more or nothing less. Just a well balanced and easy drinking pale ale. Good start to this brewery, keep it coming.
