Moon dog & nogne o ‘selvmordstokt’ wheat porter with sour cherry wine

Rating:

imageSuch a unique looking beer…and really, this is why we always return to Moon dog beers. “A 100% wheat porter to begin with! Hard work in the mash, but it worked. Then blended with a bretty sour cherry (morello – for yous cherry buffs) wine. Brewed with one of our absolute all-time favs – Kjetil from Nogne O. Black forest cake beer. Delicious”.

Served in a beer tulip it pours jet black with dark red edges. Minimal head and lacing. The aroma is really interesting. Lots of sweet, phenolic currants, sour cherry, dark fruits, vinegar and oak. But also has a decent presence of chocolate malt and cocoa. Literally like a liquid cherry ripe bar in your glass! Mouth feel is a tad thin, very light on. Although these 2 flavours do work together the flavours are confusing. Simple, yet complex at the same time. Quite tart upfront with sour cherries and candy sugar moving through the mid. Some chocolate pops up before a subtle, bitter espresso finish lingers on the back end. Huge points for balancing these flavours…they could have really clashed if they got it wrong. At 7.6% ABV it’s definitely not a sessional beer, normally we aren’t fans of the really tart and phenolic beers but somehow we enjoyed this one. Almost like a Lambic at times. Solid collaboration beer.
