Mr Banks ‘Cake Eater’ DDH Double IPA (Nelson & El Dorado)

Glassware: IPA

Appearance: Turbid pastel yellow with a short white head perched on top. It gradually forms a ring with wavy lace on its way down.

Aroma: The Nelson Sauvin and El Dorado work really well in tandem – sweet, ripe mango, pineapple and melon in spades with the more subtle touches of white grapes and slightly tart gooseberry (classic Nelson characteristics). Nice creamy base…the lactose and oats bind it all together. Maybe a hint of spice and pine resin too. Bloody ripper of an aroma!

Flavour: It opens with a bit of aggression actually. A lot more acidity, pithy grapefruit and rind which wasn’t as distinct on the nose. Stonefruit and melon starting to open up as it settles. Getting some dank herbs and peppery spice moving in to a dry and pithy finish which really carried through well.

Mouthfeel: Super creamy with good viscosity. Almost gelatinous at times. Medium-full body. 8% ABV fairly noticeable.

Overall: Aussie brewers are definitely getting a lot better at this NEIPA caper. Appearance and aroma is spot on here we just feel the slightly assertive bitterness and ABV is what separates us from the class of American NEIPA’s. But as they say…good things are worth the wait!
