Served in a beer tulip. This imperial coffee stout presents an impenetrable black appearance with a quickly fading two finger head. A collar is established but it struggles to produce any considerable lace.
Boom! One whiff of this bad boy and we know we’re in for a treat. The coffee features beautifully – not overdone, it just blends in with the dark chocolate, vanilla, molasses, licorice and prunes. It kind of has this Founders brekky stout quality which is luring us in big time. So brilliantly balanced and tempered for such a gigantic beer. Impressive aroma.
In the mouth it’s dense and boisterous, no where near as aggressive as we were expecting. Very plump in body although a nice little spritzy Co2 picks it up. The 11.9% ABV is incredibly well buried.
Again the front palate acts a lot like the Founders brekky stout – impeccably balanced with coffee, chocolate, oats, vanilla, cocoa and milk sugars that open up on to an ascension of warming booze and subtle astringency through the mid. It’s led by a rich, complex finish that boasts espresso, toasty malts and licorice on the back palate. Really good length provided here.
Very impressive stuff. This was our first crack at this breweries range and when you consider it cost us nearly $50 we’re sure you could sympathise with us! We must admit though…it is worth every cent as it is phenomenal. Share this you must! For your hip pocket and your head the next morning.
