“Alter Ego is a member of the Julius family, taking the base of Julius and adding a tremendous amount of Mosaic to the dry hop with a kiss of Amarillo. What results is a beer with all the deliciousness of Julius with a pungent additional layer of juicy, citrusy complexity. It is intensely flavorful and full bodied yet maintains a pleasantly drinkable disposition. Over time, Alter Ego has become a truly singular member of the Tree House IPA family and presents as a distinct member of our core line-up.”
Glassware: IPA glass.
Appearance: Murky orange complexion. The pour yields a fluffy free finger head which persists and works a blotchy lace down the glass.
Aroma: Jam packed with orange citrus, tropical fruits, mango, pine, guava and sweet and sugary pineapple. It has a bit of a candied accent happening -mostly orange, kiwi fruit and pineapple but it’s nicely offset by the biscuity cracker malts. Maybe a light stonefruit undertone as it settles. Just an all-out juice bomb!
Flavour: Orange citrus, grapefruit, guava and mango come on strong with soft pine and semi sweet bready malts in support. It makes way for a bit of stonefruit and mango before bitter notes of grapefruit and orange rind steal the show in the finish. Showing some legs too! Drawing out nicely on the back palate
Mouthfeel: Medium body, creamy texture. Nicely carbonated with a bit more bitterness showing through. 6.8% AbV is well concealed too!
Overall: TH call this beer a “member of the Julius family”. Only just reviewing Julius last week we couldn’t agree more. The foundations of the two are very similar with the change in dry hopping providing most of the distinction. With that aside it’s still another absolute cracker from Treehouse.
