Banks ‘Cake Eater – Krush & Citra’ DDH Oat Cream DIPA

Rating:

“Soft, plush, and stacked with hops. Krush and Citra bring waves of ripe stone fruit and citrus zest, cushioned by a silky oat cream body. Big on flavour but easy on the edges, so you can have your cake and eat it too.”

Glassware: IPA.

Appearance: Looks the goods! Proper turbid, light mustard-esque body with a dense and creamy one and a bit finger head. Good retention and healthy lace work in its wake.

Aroma: We dig the hop combo used for this iteration. It’s the old mixed with the new. The Citra hops can be detected a mile off with its acetic citrus notes of grapefruit, orange/peel and pine/resin but the Krush hops offer a more nuanced admixture of unripened mango, celery, peach skin, a touch of apricot, guava and pine bark. As usual the soft, oat-laden, pillowy malt profile is just divine.

Flavour: Throws a bit at us initially. We get hints of nectar-filled fruits, resinous pine, sweet and tropical mango, orange and guava. The piney notes are passed the baton and run with a notably resinous character which works back into the tropical fruity nature nicely. Super soft, pillowy oats and delicate chalkiness are the perfect counterbalance as it finishes smooth, dry and resiny.

Mouthfeel: Aerated, creamy and smooth AF. Not quite beer clouds but close to it. Finely carbed, light on. The 8% ABV is so well hidden.

Overall: Absolutely love the Cake Eater series. It’s without a doubt one of Australia’s best interpretations of an oat cream DIPA.
