Sierra navada ‘Beer camp’ Oatmeal stout

Rating:

sierraNevada_oatMealStout“This big oatmeal stout is midnight black in color–with a big roasty, mocha-like aroma. It has a silky body from the use of rolled oats, and a round and lasting finish. Perfect as an after dinner treat.”

Another good looking addition to the beer camp series from these class brewers at Sierra Nevada. Served in a beer tulip the dense black pour generates a 1/2 inch tan cap. Good head retention and plenty of streaky lace follows the beer down. Off the nose we get the obvious oatmeal/biscuity grains along with a rich espresso bitterness. Wafts of dark chocolate and roasted malts are also in here backing it up. There’s a creamy texture in the mouth with a low carbonation level. Just short of full-bodied. Despite the high alcohol content (9%) the front palate still hits us like a tonne of bricks. Tightly packed roasted malts, espresso, alcohol and oats creep forward through the mid and finish with a subtle peaty back end. Good duration, the smoky/peaty element hangs around for a decent period of time. We found the rich, heavy flavours went down very well with, and also after a meal. Like a good desert wine. Definitely worth a try.
