Coronado brewing co. ‘islander’ IPA

Rating:

image“Named after Coronado Island, our original India Pale Ale is a liquid expression of hometown pride. Centennial, Chinook and Columbus hops combine to provide an explosive burst of piney bitterness and luscious notes of apricot, grapefruit and mango that are sure to evoke imagery of swaying palms and sun-kissed shores”

Here we have another quality craft brewery situated in the heard of the West Coast of USA. Just another one to add to their already ridiculous selection. Served in an IPA glass the slightly hazy straw gold pour constructs a one finger white head with good retention. Laced well. Gorgeous fruity aroma. Lashings of zesty grapefruit, orange peel, pine, mandarin and passion fruit are nicely offset by doughy notes with a caramel malt base. Benchmark American IPA aroma. In the mouth it’s oily with medium carbonation. Medium bitterness and vibrant body. An assertive hop bitterness upfront, with a zesty presence of grapefruit and passion fruit. Subtle malt and some resinous hops move through the mid-palate and  deliver a slightly earthy finish with citrus lingering on the back end. 7% ABV was spot on, never overpowering but present in flavour. All in all, a very highly palatable IPA. Brilliant, we’ll go as far as to say it’s much better than this brewery’s more well known pumpkin ale.
