Heretic ‘shallow grave’ porter

Rating:

image“Shallow Grave Porter is dark as night, perfect for a cool evening out in the woods. This is a big, dark ale with a complex and rich chocolate and caramel malt character followed by a touch of warmth and light malt sweetness, leaving you ready for more after each shovelful. You will love this so much you won’t have time to dig a six-footer, so make it a Shallow Grave.”

We love the sinister looking labels these American brewers produce, they could very easily pass as a cover for the latest horror film. Served in a tulip glass the appearance displays a dense opaque black with a compacted brown head that quickly collapsed to a collar. Minimal lacing. Dark, roasted malts fill up the nose instantly. Decadent lashings of roasted coffee, dark chocolate and caramel are balanced out by a sweet combination of molasses, vegemite, licorice and leather. A subtle addition of salty game gives this already brilliant aroma an extra level of depth. The mouth feel is well rounded and oily with mild carbonation. Full bodied. The fore flavour is packed full of rich and roasted coffee, chocolate and malt. The mid-palate offers a sweeter flavour with macadamia and molasses coming forward. The long roasted finish consists of espresso, cocoa, nuts and dark chocolate. 7% ABV is spot on and well buried. This is the porter that keeps on giving. Big on aroma, big on flavour and big on character. Absolute pearler of a porter. Big ups to the heretic boys. This is a damn fine brew.
