Firestone walker ‘woo key jack’ black rye IPA

Rating:

image“A unique twist on the Cascadian Dark Ale style.  Wookey Jack offers true hop aroma to rival most IPAs, with pungent citrus and herbal hop nuances, a hint of peppery rye and earthiness on the nose.  Big roasty malt flavors with balanced hop bitterness and spicy rye offer a full and complex texture with a refined bittered finish.  A truly different IPA for dark beer fans. ”

Well, everything we have had from this USA brewery has been superb so we are expecting a lot from this dark rye IPA. It’s unfiltered also to preserve all the goodness. Pouring a mat black with a finger width head that persists then flattens to virtually nothing. Has a lovely roasted aroma mixed with a citrus hop burst, booze presence, and a caramel/butterscotch grain hit. Quite complex. First flavour is really nice. Not too heavily carbonated in the mouth, but a nice hit of spice from the rye, a nice whack of citrus and grapefruit, cocao, espresso, and a subdued and well balanced booze backbone ( alc vol of 8.3%). Almost an oily texture in the mouth as it just slides down the gullet. Back palate is just nice peppery spice and fairly contained bitterness (60 IBU) with roasted malts. All the way down the glass there is patchy lacing. There is great balance of sweet malt and bitter hops, with a salty presence. We love beers that have these flavours and are brilliantly balanced. Another extremely decent offering here.
